Consider bench mode when the ECU is already removed, the vehicle is unavailable, OBD communication is unreliable, or controlled off-vehicle access is required for diagnosis or recovery. A seller-published KT200II EDC16U1 report, dated July 12, 2024, documents read and write operations through both OBD and bench access. Its bench example identifies a Bosch EDC16U1 with an MPC555 processor and groups the application with diesel vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda. The driver shown in that report is under Bench Mode, the vehicle group, MPC555 - VAG, and EDC16 U1.

That evidence is useful for understanding the menu path and the existence of two access methods. It does not prove support for every EDC16U1 part number, software version, vehicle, prior modification, or damaged unit. Coverage can change with software releases, and a screenshot cannot replace identification from the ECU label and the current tool database.

Choose OBD when the vehicle can support a clean session

Choose bench when controlled access solves a real problem

Bench mode is useful when the ECU is already out of the car, when a donor vehicle is not present, or when vehicle-side communication is unreliable and the supported bench driver offers an appropriate route. It can also separate ECU communication from faults elsewhere on the vehicle network. That does not make bench mode automatically safer: an incorrect identification or unverified connection remains a serious risk.

A file called "original" is not evidence by itself. Store the first read in a job folder that includes the ECU label photo, tool software version, selected driver, access mode, read date and vehicle reference.
